• Thursday, May 28 • 7pm-8:30pm • English On August 15, 1549, St. Francis Xavier and a team of missionaries stepped ashore at Kagoshima, Japan, intending to spread the Gospel. Over the next 65 years, converts exceeded 300K, making Japan the jewel of missionary efforts in the East. But in 1614, Christianity was outlawed. Within 30 years, the Faith was driven underground as Christians faced two choices: apostasy or execution. Come hear the story of Japan’s Christian Century, as Walt Mussell, historical fiction author and Japanese history enthusiast, shares the story of these unknown Catholic martyrs and how Japan became as forbidden as the Garden of Eden. The presentation is an offshoot of Walt’s research for his novels and he’s open to answering any Catholic history questions about Shōgun and Silence.
