Celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Save the date for the celebration of Our Lady of the Americas! Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared in a vision to St. Juan Diego in 1531. According to tradition, Mary appeared to Juan Diego on December 9th, requesting that a shrine be built on the spot where she appeared, the Tepeyac Hill. However, the bishop demanded a sign before approving the construction of the church. Mary then appeared a second time to Juan Diego on Dec 12 and ordered him to collect roses as the sign requested by the bishop. When Juan Diego let the roses fall to the floor in front of the bishop, the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was imprinted inside his cloak, which led to a large number of people converting to Catholicism across the Americas. This image continues to be venerated in the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City. In 1754, Pope Benedict XIV established December 12th as the feast day for Our Lady of Guadalupe, and in 1999, Pope John Paul II declared her as the Patroness of the Americas.
